Agate is a variety of quartz characterized by its fineness of grain and brightness of color. This stone can be found in various minerals; however it is classically associated to originate in volcanic and metamorphic rocks.  Agate comes in a variety of colors including white, grey, light blue, orange, yellow, red, and black. Sometime during the 4^th century BC, it was discovered along the shore line of the Acate river in Sicily by the Greek philosopher Theophrastus.
