Fifteen years ago, Rebecca Lankford began designing jewelry for herself and her friends as a fun hobby. During this time she was working as a paralegal, and decided to attend Glassell School of Art in Texas; where she studied and graduated in jewelry design and technique. In 1993, a local art gallery began to sell Lankford’s designs after noticing her jewelry being worn by one of her friends. Lankford’s designs range from sophisticated to bohemian.
In Greek, the word sappheiros (sapphire) means blue. Most sapphires used in jewelry are commonly blue; however, trace elements in this gem create for other hues such as yellow, pink, purple, orange, or green. Sapphires in these stunning hues can make for beautiful pieces of jewelry.
Lankford’s Sapphire Cluster Necklace is dainty and stylish. She uses four purple sapphire briolettes and one larger orange sapphire briolette as the centerpiece of this necklace. Each gem is surrounded by tiny gold circles that separate them. These gems and circles hang from a 15 ½” 14kt gold rope chain. Buy the Sapphire Cluster Necklace through Clay Pot for $390 $195. It’s been said that turquoise and coral are the must-have hues for this spring/summer. I happen to be fond of this type of jewelry, and wanted to find a bold piece that would accentuate this style. In a recent issue of Marie Claire, I saw the ornamental Simple Floral Cuff by Shelly Saber for GS Lillian.
This turquoise and coral cuff caught my attention with its vibrant look and bold white & silver accents. With a piece like this, there is no need to add other jewelry to your ensemble. The cuff contains a ceramic 3” flower in these colors outlined with red and turquoise seed beads. The flower is beautifully displayed on a shiny brass cuff.
The designer of this cuff, Shelly Saber, began creating jewelry for herself when she could not find the perfect accessory to complement her style. With lots of luck and hard work, Saber was able to turn her love of jewelry into a full-time career with the success of her company GS Lillian. Saber’s handcrafted designs present a distinctive look of their own using brass, porcelain, glass, natural stones, and pearls.
